History/Social Science Instructional Strategies

Selecting the best methodology to teach history/social science is dependent on the type of content, the age of the student, and the amount of time available. The Lessons database on SCORE History/Social Science has over 1200 suggested activities for specific content topics searchable by grade level, topic, or standard. The Content Literacy section has a host of ideas related to helping students comprehend various types of social studies text including fiction, primary sources, and the textbook.

The following are general strategies that can be used to teach many history/social science content topics. They have been divided into groups based on the grades for which they are most appropriate. This is an active section of SCORE H/SS where new ideas and strategies will continuously be added. If you have a strategy you would like to share, please write it up and send it to angela_dorough@sbcss.k12.ca.us.

Questions, comments, and suggestions may be addressed to webmaster@rims.k12.ca.us.
