Teacher Notes

PURPOSE: This lesson will expose students to basic legal reasoning skills.

OBJECTIVES: Students will learn basic legal vocabulary, and then will be able to analyze that person's actions to show the degree of criminal liability. Students will write a verdict and a sentencing recommendation.

STANDARDS:
12.2 Students evaluate and take and defend positions on the scope and limits of rights and obligations as democratic citizens, the relationships among them, and how they are secured.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: You may wish to print off copies of the case so that each student has one. As an extension, a debate can be organized. {Jennifer was not given the death penalty because she agreed to testify against Brian. Brian was convicted of conspiracy and received 37 years. He will be eligible for parole after twelve. Jennifer was later convicted and given a life sentence without parole. Why are the sentences different?} The legal vocabulary can be reinforced through a discussion or quiz.
