Summarizing is an important skill and is especially useful for learning material deeply. Mexican citizens who were stranded in U.S. territory after the Mexican –American War more than likely read and studied the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo carefully and made summaries in order to truly understand their rights and be able to explain them to family and business partners. The following activity will help students develop skill in summarizing.

Activity:
On the lines provided, students transcribe each phrase of Article VIII from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo into their own words. Then they read through what have written so that it makes sense. To create a summary, they draw a line through all the “unnecessary” words (or words that do not add to the sense) or repeated ideas.

ARTICLE VIII

Mexicans now established [living] in territories [land] previously [before now] belonging to Mexico, and which remain for the future within the limits of the United States, as defined by the present treaty, shall be free to continue where they now reside [live], or to remove [move] at any time to the Mexican Republic, retaining [keeping] the property which they possess in the said territories, or disposing [getting rid of] thereof, and removing the proceeds [profit] wherever they please, without their being subjected, on this account, to any contribution (fee), tax, or charge whatever.

Those who shall prefer to remain in the said territories may either retain the title and rights of Mexican citizens, or acquire [gain] those of citizens of the United States. But they shall be under the obligation [duty] to make their election [choice] within one year from the date of the exchange of ratifications [formal approvals] of this treaty; and those who shall remain in the said territories after the expiration [end] of that year, without having declared their intention [told people their choice] to retain the character of Mexicans, shall be considered to have elected to become citizens of the United States.

In the said territories, property of every kind, now belonging to Mexicans not established there, shall be inviolably [unbreakably] respected. The present owners, the heirs [children] of these, and all Mexicans who may hereafter acquire said property by contract [legal document], shall enjoy with respect to it guarantees [vows] equally ample [the same amount] as if the same belonged to citizens of the United States.
