The Teaching American History Institutes are federally funded programs to raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history.

The purpose is to promote the teaching of traditional American history in elementary and secondary schools in an exciting and engaging way so that students develop an appreciation for the great ideas and ideals of American history.

Each Teaching American History Institute works in partnership with higher education, nonprofit history or humanities organizations, libraries, or museums. San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools is a partner in two Teaching American History Institutes, the Desert Area Teaching American History Institute, and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Teaching American History Program.
