Your country is very divided about its policy toward Germany. Roughly half of the French people think Germany is their major enemy, the other half are convinced that communism and therefore the Soviet Union is the major foe.
Your military energy has gone into building a defense line, the Maginot Line, between northern France and Germany. This series of underground forts and connecting underground railroad is so big it houses around 500,000 soldiers at a time. You do not want to repeat the disaster of the trench warfare of the Great War (the first world war) in northern France. Your thinking is totally defensive, against Germany, and you have never developed any real plans to invade Germany. You will reluctantly follow Britain's lead.
