The program for the past four years involved teacher participation that focused on student literacy skills with the integration of language arts and history-social science. By focusing on the first half of the nineteenth century (1800-1850), fifth grade teachers explored important issues in American history and ways to bring the era to life for their students.
Teachers learned about the people who lived through this amazing era by working together to explore the following three themes:
- Encounter - Assimilation or Separation? The Native American Experience.
- Equality or Dependence: American Women and Citizenship.
- America in Black and White: Slavery, Expansion, and Citizenship.
