Mojave Desert Miners

Projects For You

Long ago they used mule teams to move the borax and today they use these giant trucks.

In 1881 Aaron Winters found borax in Death Valley. To get this valuable ore to the train, William Coleman built special wagons to haul the borax 165 miles to Mojave.
To pull these heavy wagons they used a team of 20 mules (actually they usually used 18 mules and 2 horses).

You should go to the store soon and look in the soap aisle for a box of 20 Mule Team Borax.

Drills like this one found at the museum in Boron were a big improvement over the pick and shovel I used in the 1890's.
