After
Karana's people were taken to the mainland, they wanted to return for her. The
ship that rescued them later sank on the way to San Francisco. The rocks and
weather around the island made it difficult for ships to reach it. There were
few vessels that could make the voyage. Eventually, Father Gonzales at Mission
Santa Barbara offered a $200 reward for her rescue.
