Did you know that the abalone head has a mouth? Inside
the mouth is a long "file" like tongue. This tongue is useful for scraping
algae, but it does not get food through the holes.

The abalone takes in water, which 
passes
over its gills and then out through the holes. The gills get oxygen from the
water so the animal can breath.
As the shell grows bigger, new holes are added and the old ones on the opposite end of the row are plugged.
