3	Main idea explained at the start of the article. Some body paragraphs support the main reason.
2	Either main idea is not clearly stated, or body paragraphs do not support main idea.
1	Main idea cannot be discerned.

Writing style:

Score
4	Interesting lead sentence/paragraph grabs reader, and structure sustains interest until the end.
3	Interesting lead but fails to sustain interest through who, what, why sequence.
2	Has format but lead doesn’t grab the reader.
1	Not in newspaper format throughout.

Grammar/spelling:

Score
4	No mistakes with the use of complex sentence structures.
3	No mistake with the use of simple sentence structures or one mistake in a more complex sentence style.
