Helen Hunt Jackson

Description: Helen Hunt Jackson was an activist for California Native American rights. She worked for years trying to reverse Indian policies that ignored land rights through legislation. Her bill passed the Senate but died in the House of Representatives. Undaunted by Congress' rejection, Jackson wrote a novel that would depict the Indian experience "in a way to move people's hearts," entitled Ramona. Standard 3.2.4
