Description: Using primary source drawings, pictures, and documents supported by oral history transcripts from two Californians, this website describes the internment of Japanese in 1942 and conscription of those same young men later in the war. Some Japanese agreed to fight; others said they wouldn't unless they and their families were freed. Learn their stories and discuss the issues of civil rights they raise. Standards 11.7.5 and 12.3.4

Soldiers, nurses, school children, and others tell stories about everyday life from rationing to what it was like to live through a bombing raid. You may also e-mail the contributors with specific questions. You can also view ration recipes. Standard 10.8.6 and 11.7.5

Description: This Cornell Law School version of the Constitution is divided into sections by article and amendment. Each section is annotated to identify the contents of that part of the Constitution. Standards 5.7, 8.1, 8.2, 8.11, 11.1,11.7.5, 12.1, and 12.4

Comments: It is difficult to identify the standard for this document since it applies to so much of the H-SS curriculum. The ones listed here are only the most direct connection.

U-505 German World War II Submarine

Description: This site is a series of photos with text showing the U-505 German World War II Type-IXc Unterseeboot (submarine) that was captured in battle on the high seas by boarding parties from the USS Guadalcanal task group 23 on 4 June 1944. It currently sits on the east side of the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and is not only an exhibit, but also a memorial to the tens of thousands of men who lost their lives in the Battle of the Atlantic in two world wars. Standard 11.7.6

Aleutian World War II National Historic Area

Description: Learn about the little remembered Japanese attack on American land in Alaska in 1942, the subsequent build up of U.S. defences in the Aleutians, and the forced relocation of Native Alaskans that occurred. Included on the site is a primary source story from one of the Native people about the experience of living in a conflict zone and their forced move to an area out of harm's way. Standard 11.6.5

Birth of the Atomic Bomb - Fat Man and Little Boy

Description: The world's first atomic bomb used in combat looked like an elongated trash can with fins. The American Airpower Museum does a first rate job of showing the story of the dropping of these bombs. Standards 10.8.6 and 11.7.7
