Examination of Mrs Anne Hutchinson at the Court at Newton. 1637

Description: This is the court transcript of the trial of Anne Hutchinson who challenged the authority of Puritan ministers in colonial Massachusetts. The religious climate in the Massachusetts Bay Colony was oppressive. The male members of Boston's church met regularly to discuss sermons but when Anne held meetings in her home, she was charged with upsetting the peace by challenging the church authority. Standard 5.4.3 and 11.3.2

Four Great Awakenings

Description: Robert William Fogel from the University of Chicago argues that to understand what is taking place today, we need to understand the nature of the recurring political-religious cycles called "Great Awakenings." Each lasting about 100 years, Great Awakenings consist of three phases, each about a generation long. Here is a chart by Fogel summarizing the main trusts and the social impact of the religious revivals in America. It lists the current religious movement as the Fourth Great Awakening. Standard 11.3.2

Historic Decisions of the Supreme Court - Engel vs. Vitale

Description: Engel vs. Vitale is a First Amendment freedom of religion case. Because of the prohibition of the First Amendment against the enactment of any law "respecting an establishment of religion," which is made applicable to the States by the Fourteenth Amendment, state officials may not compose an official state prayer and require that it be recited in the public schools of the State at the beginning of each school day -- even if the prayer is denominationally neutral and pupils who wish to do so may remain silent or be excused from the room while the prayer is being recited. Standards 11.3.5 and 12.5.4
