Mexican Immigration Before World War II

Description: This section describes the issues of Mexican immigration to the U.S. from the 1840s through World War II. During the 1840s, observers thought that Yankees would flow from Texas to the Valley of Mexico and the Isthmus of Tehu ntepec and beyond. They were wrong; instead, the tide moved in the other direction, at first slowly, then with increasing force. This movement from Mexico was scarcely noticeable until the beginning of the twentieth century. Standards 8.12.7 and 11.8.2

Comments: This is useful background to current immigration discussions and for understanding Mexican influences in the southwest U.S..
