Abolition, Anti-Slavery Movements, and the Rise of the Sectional Controversy

Description: Black and white abolitionists in the first half of the nineteenth century waged a biracial assault against slavery. Their efforts proved to be extremely effective. Abolitionists focused attention on slavery and made it difficult to ignore. They heightened the rift that had threatened to destroy the unity of the nation even as early as the Constitutional Convention. As the nineteenth century progressed, many abolitionists united to form numerous antislavery societies. These groups sent petitions with thousands of signatures to Congress, held abolition meetings and conferences, boycotted products made with slave labor, printed mountains of literature, and gave innumerable speeches for their cause. Individual abolitionists sometimes advocated violent means for bringing slavery to an end. Standards 8.9.1 and 8.9.5

Description: This is an incredible Library of Congress exhibit on the African American experience in American history. Comments: This resource covers many standards but seeing these documents altogether provides a powerful look at the African American experience in the U.S.

Africans in America 1831-1865 - Judgment Day

Description: As westward expansion took hold, the question of whether the United States would be a proslavery or antislavery nation took on new importance. In the North, antislavery forces included abolitionists, who wanted a future without slavery so that black people could be free, and Free Soil advocates, who resented having to compete with owners of slave-tended plantations for use of new lands. White Southern planters wanted a future for themselves and their prosperous way of life, which depended on the institution of slavery. As the New York Tribune announced, "We are two peoples. We are a people for Freedom and a people for slavery. Between the two, conflict is inevitable." Rising conflict led to Civil War in 1861, and the country was torn asunder. After four years and the loss of 617,000 American lives, the Union was saved, African Americans were promised the rights of citizens, and slavery was abolished. Standards 8.8.2, 8.7.2, 8.9.4, and 8.9.5

Civil War at the Smithsonian

Description: The Smithsonian Institution houses an extraordinary array of Civil War artifacts in nearly a dozen of its museums and archives. They range in interest from personal effects-- Abraham Lincoln's black beaver top hat--to examples of uniforms and weapons. This site features numerous virtual exhibitions including presentations on slavery and abolition, Abraham Lincoln, the beginning of the war, soldiers, weapons, leaders and life. Objects can be accessed individually by clicking the appropriate images. "See more," a special feature on selected pages, will access additional information. Standards 8.9 and 8.10

Compromise of 1850, The

Description: By 1850 sectional disagreements centering on slavery were straining the bonds of union between the North and South. This compromise, worked out by Congress after endless debate, was actually a series of bills passed mainly to address issues related to slavery. The bills provided for slavery to be decided by popular sovereignty in the admission of new states, prohibited the slave trade in the District of Columbia, settled a Texas boundary dispute, and established a stricter fugitive slave act. This featured document is Henry Clay's handwritten draft. Standard 8.9.5

Comments: This Our Documents site has a facsimile of the original document, a transcription and background information to help the reader put the document in context.
