Map Work

Teacher Notes

Part Four

The map

Obtain a map from your teacher. Get an atlas of the US. Place the job locations from your job profile on the map. Design a symbol for the miner, fisherman, service provider, railroad worker and farmer. Draw the job symbol in the right place. Make a key for the symbols and give the map a title. Remember that these locations represent only a few of the many places in the West where Chinese people lived and worked. Make one map for your group. For extra credit, add some of the places not mentioned in websites that had large Chinese populations in the late 1800's: Port Townsend and Seattle, Washington; fishermen in Portland, Oregon; farmers in Boise Idaho; Butte, Montana; Salt Lake City , Utah; and miners in Fiddletown, Copperopolis and Columbia, California; are just a few.
