Canaan was the homeland of the Israelites. It was a small area but it was important in the ancient world because of its location. It was an important trading route and market. It sometimes also became battlefield. It lay in the path of expansion for both the Egyptians and the Assyrians.
The land of Canaan was quite varied. It had rocky hills.
It had dry, arid deserts
Canaan was their homeland but it was not always a good place to live. There were frequent famines when no food was grown.
Since the land was so dry and hot, most of the ancient Israelites were herders rather than farmers.
Many of the people were nomads who lived in tents and traveled from place to place looking for pastures for their sheep, cattle and goats.
