The Land of the Israelites

Canaan was the homeland of the

Israelites. It was a small area but

it was important in the ancient world

because of its location.

It was an important trading route and market.

It sometimes also became battlefield. It lay in the path of

expansion for both the Egyptians

and the Assyrians.

The land of Canaan was quite varied.

It had rocky hills.

It had dry, arid deserts

Canaan was their homeland but it

was not always a good place to live. There

were frequent famines when no food was grown.

Since the land was so dry and hot,

most of the ancient Israelites were herders

rather than farmers.

Many of the people were nomads who

lived in tents and traveled from

place to place looking for pastures for their sheep,

cattle and goats.
