The Torah tells us that Abraham was the first ancient Israelite to be

called a Hebrew. He was born in Mesapotamia in the city of Ur.

According to the story in the Torah, God appeared to Abraham

one night when Abraham was praying. In the book of Genesis,

God told Abraham to "Go forth from your native land and from

your father's house, unto the land that I will show you. I will make you

a great nation." This story explains how the Israelite nation

began with the descendants of Abraham.
